Iceland is not really known for its genre films, we mostly do dramas and a comedy now and then with a few misguided attempts at thrillers every few years. We've only made one horror film that I know of and even though our sagas are ripe with fantastic elements nobody has attempted to make a film about this. Until now.
Next summer Iceland's first fantasy film, Astropia, will premier over here and it will be interesting to see how it does. While it's not a through and through fantasy film, it is a romantic comedy with fantasy elements thrown in the mix. It's about a yuppie glamour girl whose world is turned upside down when her boyfriend is arrested for fraud and thrown in jail. Having never worked a day in her life she has to find an apartment, a job and finds one at a comic book store, a job that is. There she meets a colourful group of people she would have never associated herself with in her former life. There she learns about geekdom and most of all the world of Role Playing. And that's where the fantasy elements come in.
A clip from the film has been posted online, with subtitles, showing a small scene between a young customer of the comic book store and its employee.
The film is an all star cast in Icelandic terms but that doesn't really mean anything to you people out there in LA LA Land but it does feature a former Miss Iceland in the lead so there's something to look at, at least.
Below are a couple of stills as well.
