"I'd like to keep it out because I think it's a despicable film." - Jim Watson, then Minister of Consumer and Business Services for Ontario, as quoted in the March 23, 2005 Pulse24.com article "True Horror"

From the January 14, 2006 Globe and Mail article "Karla TV commercials yanked":

CHUM Television and Alliance Atlantis Communications announced late yesterday that they have stopped running the 30-second commercials for the controversial film Karla which they had been broadcasting on their stations since Tuesday.

. . .

An account manager for CHUM notified Christal's Toronto-based ad buyer by e-mail yesterday, saying it had "made a decision to cancel all scheduled campaigns due to the sensitivity and nature of [Karla]." In his e-mail memo to the ad buyer, the Alliance representative characterized the "content of this film [as] inappropriate to run on any of our networks at any time."

CHUM has 12 stations across Canada and 21 specialty channels while Alliance programs 13 cable TV channels. The Karla ads ran on Alliance Atlantis's Showcase service and on CITY-TV in Toronto, but it was unclear whether other services were involved. Nor was it clear whether the discontinuation was the result of pressure from viewers or strictly an internal decision.
