Those clowns...

Who could ever expect it: a film with no stars about court jesters, competing with big apes, 20 Billion Won blockbusters and costly melodramas with big stars... beating them all. Lee Joon-Ik's tour de force 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown) is becoming the surprise of the season, in ways similar to last year's 웰컴 투 동막골 (Welcome To Dongmakgol), which thanks to extremely good word of mouth raced to sell over 8 Million tickets.

Produced By Eagle Pictures, the film was released last December 29 recording an excellent opening day, which allowed distributors to increase its nationwide release, still at around 350 screens. According to distributors, the film is expected to hit the 4 Million tickets mark by tomorrow, after 16 days on release. It took only 12 days to reach the 3 Million mark for the Drama, about Prince Yeonsan and a group of Royal Clowns. It looks like the film's box office run will continue for a while, as online pre-order sales show. Leading Maxmovie's charts with 57.83% and Interpark's 47.3%, a significant improvement over last week's figures, the film is doing much better than the Kwon Sang-Woo/Yoo Ji-Tae noir 야수 (Running Wild) and all its other competitors.
